  • Description

Tennis...and top seed Vitas Gerulaitis of the United States has won the men's singles of the Australian Open tournament. In a gruelling five-set final played in Melbourne on Saturday (31 December), he beat England's John Lloyd 6-3 7-6 5-7 3-6 6-2.

SYNOPSIS: Gerulaitis, serving, began briskly and he used his speed about the court to take the first set without difficulty.

But Lloyd was a different proposition in the second, forcing his opponent into a tie-breaker.

Lloyd eventually struck back by taking the third set with a break in the 11th game. Lloyd became the first English player to figure in the final of the Australian Open since Fred Perry won the title in 1934.

Gerulaitis collected 28,000 U.S. dollars for his three-hour and 10 minute performance, while Lloyd received 14,000 dollars-his biggest pay cheque.

Lloyd took the fourth set 6-3, after breaking through in the seventh and ninth games, but slowed down in the decider.

Gerulaitis kept his cool despite leg cramp to beat Lloyd in the final set to take the title.
