  • Description

THE GREEK-CYPRIOT QUARTER OF NICOSIA, CYPRUS, WAS ROCKED LATE LAST NIGHT (FRIDAY) BY AN EXPLOSION IN A PARKED CAR.

THE CAR, WHICH WAS WRECKED, WAS PARKED OUTSIDE THE HOME OF A GREEK-CYPRIOT JOURNALIST NEAR THE RESIDENCE OF THE BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONER.

THE FAMILIES OF MANY BRITISH AIR FORCE MEN ALSO LIVE IN THE AREA.

AIR FORCE POLICE, UNITED NATIONS POLICE AND CYPRUS POLICE RUSHED TO THE AREA TO INVESTIGATE THE BLAST.

SOURCES CLOSE TO THE UNITED NATIONS SECRETARIAT IN CYPRUS SAID LAST NIGHT THAT DAMAGE TO PROPERTY BY THE VIOLENCE IN CYPRUS IN THE FIRST SEVEN MONTHS WAS ESTIMATED AT ONE-MILLION-POUNDS STERLING.

PROPERTY DAMAGED INCLUDED HOUSES, SHOPS, SCHOOLS, CHURCHES, AND THE LOOTING OF PROPERTY FITTINGS.

MEANWHILE, THE FOOD SHORTAGE IN THE TURKISH QUARTER OF NICOSIA HAS NOW BECOME VERY SERIOUS. SUPPLIES FROM TURKEY HAVE BEEN CUT OFF, AND EVEN SUPPLIES FROM OUTLYING TURKISH-CYPRIOT VILLAGES ARE DWINDLING.

THE BURDEN OF PROVIDING FOOD FOR TURKISH-CYPRIOTS HAS NOW FALLEN MAINLY ON THE OFFICIAL SOCIAL SERVICES FOOD DISTRIBUTION CENTRES, WHICH PREVIOUSLY CATERED ONLY FOR REFUGEES.

HOWEVER THERE HAS BEEN SOME EASING OF THE SITUATION FOLLOWING THE GRANTING OF GREEK-CYPRIOT PERMISSION TO UNITED NATIONS AUTHORITIES TO TRANSPORT WATER TO SOME TURKISH-CYPRIOTS.
