The opening address was made by the French Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Yvon Bourges. He noted that international communication, such as that being discussed at the conference, would help promote the "harmonious development of countries".

    SYNOPSIS: In Paris on Monday, Ministers of Information from eighteen French speaking African and Indian Ocean nations opened a two day conference on communications. The primary objective of the meeting is to discuss coordination of information procedures in the various nations.

    The conference was opened by the French Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Yvon Bourges. The delegations, which included both Congo-Brazzaville and Congo-Kinshasa listened as Mr Bourges noted that international communications, such as that being discussed at the conference, would help promote the "harmonious development of countries". He also made special mention of the presence of the delegation from Mauritius -- attending the conference for the first time.

    Other countries represented at the conference included Mauritinia, Mali Rwanda, Senegal, and Ivory Coast. The two day conference is broken down into several discussions and seminars on various communication problems and their possible solutions. Of primary concern are the technical problems involved in establishing radio and television networks. Other topics for discussion include the cinema and the establishment of schools of journalism. Of special interest to the delegates is the possibility of new methods of telecommunication through the use of satellites.
