  • Description

THE NIGERIAN FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPION, VICTOR PAUL, TOOK LESS THAN THREE ROUNDS TO DEFEAT THE GHANAIAN FEATHERWEIGHT, JOE BANKS, IN THEIR MATCH AT THE TAFAWA BALEWA SQUARE IN LAGOS ON TUESDAY NIGHT. BANKS, WHO WAS KNOCKED DOWN THREE TIMES, FOUGHT COURAGEOUSLY BUT HAD TO CALL OFF THE FIGHT TWO MINUTES AND 27 SECONDS AFTER THE START OF THE THIRD ROUND.

THE TWO MEN WERE BOTH THE SAME HEIGHT AND THE GHANAIAN ONLY ONE POUND HEAVIER, BUT PAUL - KNOWN AS "VC-10" AFTER THE AIRLINER IN NIGERIA - CUT BANKS TO PIECES WITH A SYSTEMATIC SERIES OF BLOWS OF EVERY KIND. EVEN IN THE FIRST MINUTE OF THE FIRST ROUND, THE NIGERIAN SHOWED HIMSELF THE SUPERIOR BOXER.

IN THE SECOND ROUND BANKS AT TIMES SEEMED HARDLY CONSCIOUS ON HIS FEET, AND WAS IN FACT KNOCKED DOWN THREE TIMES. AT THE END, PAUL HAD HIM ON THE ROPES, POUNDING HIM WITH A CONTINUOUS FLURRY OF PUNCHES. THE AMAZING THING WAS THAT THE GAME GHANAIAN BOXER - GHANA'S NUMBER TWO LIGHTWEIGHT CONTENDER - WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE EVEN THIS FAR.

THE END GAME IN THE THIRD ROUND. PAUL CONTINUED TO PULVERISE HIS OPPONENT, CHASING BANKS TO A NEUTRAL CORNER TO COMPLETE THE JOB. THE GHANAIAN WAS HANGING ON TO THE NIGERIAN AS HE STAGGERED, DEFENCELESS, TO THE CENTRE. THE REFEREE, TEDDY ODUS, SEPARATED THEM AND HAD HARDLY BEGUN TO ASK BANKS WHETHER HE COULD CONTINUE BEFORE THE GHANAIAN NODDED WEARILY AND ACCLAIMED PAUL THE VICTOR WITH A CONGRATULATORY HUG.
