Background: WHEN COMPLETED IN 1963, SWEDEN'S GREAT NEW GBP12 MILLION YARD AT ARENDAL, NEAR GOTHENBURG - UNDER CONSTRUCTION BY THE GOTAVERKEN SHIPBUILDING ORGANISATION - WILL BE ONE OF THE MOST MODERN SHIPYARDS IN THE WORLD. SHIPS WILL BE SPEEDILY BUILT ON 'ASSEMBLY LINE' METHODS.

WHEN STARTED IN SPRING, 1959 - OUR FILM SHOWS THE HALF-COMPLETED YARD ON DECEMBER 7 1961 - THE MAIN WORK WAS TO OBTAIN A LEVEL SURFACE - PARTS OF THE YARD WERE BLASTED OUT OF SOLID ROCK. THEN THERE WERE TWO LARGE DAYS IN THE AREA OF THE SHIPYARD. ONE OF THEM WAS FILLED WITH MATERIAL BLASTED OUT OF THE ROCKS AND THE OTHER BAY, WHERE TWO BUILDING DOCKS ARE NOW SITUATED, WAS DREDGED BY REMOVING CLAY AND SLIT.

THE CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION OF THESE BUILDING DOCKS IS NOW NEARING COMPLETION. THE TEMPORARY DAM WAS DUE TO BE REMOVED BY THE END OF THIS YEAR AND, IN JANUARY, 1962, THE TWO DOCK GATES WILL BE PUT IN PLACE. THE DOCKS ARE CONSTRUCTED AS SO-CALLED "DRAINED DOCKS", MEANING THAT SUB-SURFACE WATER IS PERMITTED TO SEEP INTO A STORAGE STRATUM, BELOW THE BASE OF THE DOCKS, AND DRAWN THERE FROM BY DRAINAGE PUMPS.

GOTAVERKEN'S BUILDING DOCKS ARE 1,098 FEET IN LENGTH. THE CLEARANCE WIDTH IS 150 FEET, AND THE DEPTH FROM AVERAGE WATER-LEVEL TO DOCK BOTTOM IS 24 FEET. THE DOCKS ARE LARGE ENOUGH TO PERMIT CONSTRUCTION OF TANKERS UP TO 140,000 TONS DEADWEIGHT. THEY HAVE BEEN MADE WIDE ENOUGH TO ALLOW TWO TANKERS OF 20,000 TONS EACH TO BE BUILT ABREAST AT THE SAME TIME IN ONE DOCK.

FIVE TANKERS ARE ALREADY ON ORDER FROM THE YARD. THREE OF THEN WILL BE 53,000 TONS DW. TWO OTHERS WILL BE 35,000 TONS DW. WHEN THE YARD IS COMPLETED IT WILL EMPLOY ABOUT 1700 WORKERS.
