  • Description

In France, thousands of dairy farmers took part in a demonstration in the north-west town of Vannes on Wednesday (11 January). They were protesting against what they called an "injust and stupid" tax on their products.

SYNOPSIS: The organisers claimed that 20,000 people took part in the demonstration.

The two percent tax was introduced in all nine member countries of the European Common Market, including France, in April of last year. The protest march was organised to try to force the authorities to withdraw the tax.

Many small farmers say the tax will force them out of business. They also complain of lack of support from their national organisation, which agreed to the tax in principle. The French government has told rebel farmers who have refused to pay that it has no intention of backing down.

This demonstration was held partly because the authorities have threatened action against farmers who have not paid their dues.
