  • Description

Kenya's top athletes were brought together -- for the first time since the Commonwealth Games in January -- on Saturday (27 April) with the opening event of the country's national track and field season at the Africa Stadium, Nakurd.

The meeting was of great importance to those athletes vying for selection in the Kenyan team to visit Finland, Denmark, Italy, Northern Ireland, England and Greece in June, July and August.

However, one of Kenya's most famous athletes was not competing. Ben Jipcho is currently competing as a professional in the United States.

The men's 400-metre Hurdles was won by Kosmos Sielei in the relatively slow time of 53.9 seconds -- nearly four seconds outside the Kenyan record. The women's 100-metre was won by Elizabeth Kubasu in 12.7 seconds - a second outside the Kenyan record.

There were better performances in the long-distance events. Joshua Kimeto ran the distance in 14 minutes 28 seconds; a good run, but still a full minute outside the Kenyan record held by the legendary Kip Keino.

In the men's 400-metre, Dan Dmwansa was three seconds outside the Kenyan record when he ran the distance in 48.4 seconds. Rose Nkirote recorded 16.9 seconds to win the women's 100-metre Hurdles. Another competitor fell heavily during the same race, but was not badly hurt.

The men's 1500-metre was won by John Kipkurhut in 3 minutes 54.8 seconds.

The poor times recorded at the meeting were blamed on the condition of the track, which was soft and dusty.
