RELIEF FROM MANY PARTS OF THE WORLD IS POURING INTO JAPAN TO HELP THE VICTIMS OF THE FIRE WHICH SWEPT THROUGH THE TOWN OF MOTOMACHI ON OSHIMA ISLAND LAST MONDAY. AT LEAST FIVE HUNDRED HOUSES, THREE-QUARTERS OF THE TOTAL ON THE ISLAND WERE DESTROYED, LEAVING 1,500 PEOPLE HOMELESS. MIRACULOUSLY THERE WERE NO CASUALTIES IN THE BLAZE, WHICH WAS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY AN OIL STOVE.

AS SOON AS THE FIRE WAS BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL, TOWNSPEOPLE, LOCAL FIREMEN AND STUDENTS BEGAN THE MASSIVE TASK OF CLEARING THE DAMAGED BUILDINGS BEFORE THE RECONSTRUCTION WORK BEGINS.

THE HOMELESS WERE GIVEN EMERGENCY AID AT RELIEF CENTRES ESTABLISHED BY THE LOCAL TOWN COUNCIL AND THE JAPANESE RED CROSS. SUPPLIES OF FOOD, CLOTHES AND MEDICINE WERE FLOWN TO THE ISLAND.

ONE OF THE FIRST GIFTS TO COME FROM ABROAD WAS FROM THE DUTCH RED CROSS. TWO THOUSAND BLANKETS WERE SENT ON A SPECIAL KLM FLIGHT TO TOKYO. THEY ARRIVED ON FRIDAY AND WERE SENT ON TO THE ISLAND THE NEXT DAY...

PREFABRICATED BUILDING MATERIALS HAVE BEEN SENT TO MOTOMACHI BY THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT. AS SOON AS THE WRECKAGE IS CLEARED, FIVE HUNDRED TEMPORARY HOUSES WILL BE ERECTED.
