    INTRODUCTION The well-known Soviet aircraft designer Sergei Iiyushin, who died last Wednesday (9 February) was buried in Moscow on Friday (11 February) with full military honours. He was 82.

    SYNPOSIS: The funeral service was held in the central club of the Soviet army. The First Deputy Minister of the Aviation Industry, Vasily Kazakov, said that the death of Iiyushin would be mourned throughout the Soviet Union.

    Senior qviation and space experts were among the officials who attended the funeral. A military guard of honour was also on hand to pay tribute to the designer and his family. Mr. Iiyushin was buried in Moscow's Novodevichy cementary, which rank second only to a niche in the Kremlin wall as a last resting place for Soviet heroes. During several decades of design work. Iiyushin created a wide range of military and civil aircraft.

    His achievements included the record-breaking twin-engined TSKB-30 in the 1930's and the Iiyushin IL-18 which became the cornerstone of the Soviet civil aviation fleet. Designing countless numbers of airplanes, Mr. Iiyushin brought Soviet aviation out of its infancy.
