  • Description

Hundreds of students battled with police for four hours in a bid to break through to a highway linking the centre of Rome with the suburb where NATO Foreign Ministers are holding their two-day meeting.

The streets of a poor neighbourhood near the hall where the NATO meeting is being staged was littered with rocks, broken bottles and burned out teargas grenades following the clash.

Sixteen policemen and eight demonstrators were officially listed as hurt. Many more students are believed to have been injured when running street fights flared up as groups tried to force their way through the police cordon at several points.

They met a hail of teargas grenades and repeated police baton charges. None managed to get to the Congress Hall, but police battled with a group of about 50 who reached the highway and tried to stop official NATO cars on their way back into Rome. About 30 arrests were made.
