HERZOG: "Mr. President, I can readily appreciate that perhaps the representatives of Pakistan, Libya, Saudi Arabia are incapable of comprehending the situation whereby courts of law independent of the executive. I can understand that a situation is incomprehensible to them whereby a court of law in Israel will not be dictated to, by any outside body, including the government of Israel, let alone this body. I don't expect them to know better, why should they? But, here you have a clear situation whereby the interests of the Moslems in this case are being protected by the government of Israel. Why then seek to attack the government of Israel who are protecting Moslem interests? The reason is that this false allegation has been prepared against Israel for political reasons in an attempt to disrupt the harmony and successful co-existence of Jew and Arab in Jerusalem, which has become a model for the world. This has been done by certain Arab Moslem countries in an atmosphere of blackmail and pressure which is irreconcilable with the faiths and beliefs of tens of thousands of Moslems throughout the world."

Background: The Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, Mr. Chaim Herzog, on Monday (22 March) accused "certain Arab countries, acting in an atmosphere of blackmail and pressure" of trying to disrupt the co-existence of Jews and Arabs ink Jerusalem.

Mr. Herzog was speaking at a Security Council debate, called at the request of Libya and Pakistan, to discuss charges that Israel was changing the status of Jerusalem, desecrating holy places and repressing its Arab inhabitants.

These charges come after weeks of violence, sparked off by an Israeli magistrate's decision to dismiss charges against a group of Jews who tried to conduct prayers on the Temple Mount.

Jews revere the area as the site of Solomon's temple, destroyed in 70 A.D. by the Romans. It is also the site of the Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest place for Moslems after Mecca and Medina.
