  • Description

Second seed Jan Kodes of Czechoslovakia became the favourite in the Ruthman's Indoor Tennis Championship at London's Albert Hall on Thursday (21 February) night when he beat Sweden's Ove Bengston.

First seed Rod Laver of Australia lost later in the evening to American Roscoe Tanner over three sets. In his match Kodes stormed through to take the first set 6-1. But the tall Bengston, who beat England's Roger Taylor in the previous round, made the second set a more difficult affair. Wimbledon champion Kodes had to fight to break the Swede's serve and complete a straight set 6-1, 7-5 win.

Sweden still have 17-year-old Bjorn Borg in the competition. He beat American Arthur Ashe 6-4, 7-6. Borg, Kodes, Tanner and Britain's Mark Cox -- who beat fellow countryman Stephen Warboys in the other quarter final match--are the semi-fiunalists.

They will all now collect cash prizes ranging form GBP 1,000 (2,200 U.S. dollars) to GBP 4,000 (8,800 U.S. dollars) for the eventual winner.
