    DESPITE A GOVERNMENT BAN ON THEIR MARCHING, STUDENTS OF THE WITWATERSRAND UNIVERSITY IN JOHANNESBURG YESTERDAY (MONDAY) HELD A LARGE DEMONSTRATION OUTSIDE THE UNIVERSITY, IN THE CENTRE OF THE CITY. THE DEMONSTRATION WAS AGAINST A GOVERNMENT VETO ON THE APPOINTMENT OF AN AFRICAN TO CAPE TOWN UNIVERSITY'S TEACHING STAFF.

    THE STUDENTS HAD PLANNED TO MARCH THROUGH JOHANNESBURG, BUT THE SOUTH AFRICAN PRIME MINISTER, MR. VORSTER FORBA??? THE MARCH, THREATENING "SWIFT AND EFFICIENT ACTION" IF IT WENT ON.

    THE PROTEST AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT'S INTERVENTION ON THE APPOINTMENT OF THE AFRICAN LECTURER HAS GATHERED MOMENTUM IN SOUTH AFRICA. STUDENT IN PIETERMARITZBURG HAVE CALLED A MASS MEETING TO CONDEMN THE VETO. IN DURBAN 750 STUDENTS HAVE SIGNED A PETITION CALLING FOR THE LECTURER'S RE-APPOINTMENT.

    THE WITWATERSRAND DEMONSTRATION CARRIED PLACARDS, AND INSTEAD OF MARCHING LINED THE ROADWAY INTO THE CITY. POLICE CARS MAINTAINED A CONSTANT PATROL. OCCASIONAL SCUFFLES BROKE OUT BETWEEN SOME DEMONSTRATORS AND RIVAL DEMONSTRATORS.

    THE STUDENTS HAVE NOW ASKED FOR SUPPORT IN THEIR CAMPAIGN FROM POLITICAL, CHURCH AND BUSINESS ORGANISATIONS.

    THE PRIME MINISTER HAS AGREED TO MEET STUDENTS IN TEN DAYS TO HEAR THEIR COMPLAINTS ABOUT GOVERNMENT INTERFERENCE.
