  • Description

THE NIGERIAN PRIME MINISTER HAS OPENED A 400-MILE EXTENSION OF THE COUNTY'S RAILWAY SYSTEM. SIR ABUBAKAR TAFAWA BALEWA TOLD HIS AUDIENCE AT MAIDUGURI -- THE RAILWAY'S TERMINUS -- ON MONDAY THAT THE GBP19 MILLION PROJECT WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT YET UNDERTAKEN BY HIS GOVERNMENT.

STEPPING DOWN FROM THE TRAIN AFTER ITS INAUGURAL JOURNEY, SIR ABUBAKAR WAS WELCOMED BY A CROWD WHICH INCLUDED THREE VISITING HEADS OF STATE: PRESIDENT HAMANI DIORI OF NIGER, PRESIDENT FRANCOISE TOMBALBAYE OF TCHAD AND PRESIDENT AHMADOU AHIDJO OF CAMEROUN. HE SAID THEIR PRESENCE WAS EVIDENCE OF THE GROWING CO-OPERATION BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENTS AND PEOPLES OF "OUR COUNTRIES".

THE RAILWAY EXTENSION BEGINS AT PLATEAU PROVINCE AT AN ELEVATION OF NEARLY 4000 FT, DESCENDS OVER 2000 FT TO BAUCHI, THE HEADQUARTERS OF BAUCHI PROVINCE, AND CONTINUES TO GOMBE, AN IMPORTANT COMMERCIAL CENTRE. THE LAST 130 MILES OF THE NEW LINE ARE IN BORNU PROVINCE.

WORK WAS BEGUN IN 1958 AND THE PROJECT WAS COMPLETED IN SIX STAGES. THE FIRST OF THESE WAS COMPLETED IN JUNE, 1961, AND WAS OPENED TO TRAFFIC THE FOLLOWING OCTOBER.
