  • Description

British Foreign Secretary, Sir Alec Douglas-Home has begun his series of talks with Rhodesian leaders aimed at bringing the gap between the two countries over a Rhodesian independence settlement.

Sir Alec and top British and Rhodesian officials will spend a week of hard bargaining in an effort to resolve the independence issue.

Britain's latest attempt to negotiate a settlement of the dispute triggered by Rhodesia's seizure of independence in 1965, began on Monday (November 15) shortly after the Foreign Secretary's arrival in Salisbury with a 90 minute meeting between Sir Alec and Rhodesian Prime Minister, Ian Smith.

SYNOPSIS: Hundreds of Rhodesians, waving the Union Jack, packed the airport terminal at Salisbury on Monday for the arrival of British Foreign Secretary, Sir Alec Douglas Home.

The Royal Air Force VC-10 jet carrying Sir Alec, Lady Douglas-Home, the British Attorney-General, Sir Peter Rawlinson and Lord Goodman, touched down in drizzling rain. They were greeted by Justice Minister, Desmond Lardner-Burke.

Later a crowd of about one thousand Rhodesians, both black and white, gathered outside Milton Buildings, headquarters of the Smith Administration, to watch Sir Alec arrive to begin the crucial negotiations. The talks aimed at breaking the six-year-old deadlock are expected to last for a week.

The deadlock was triggered by Rhodesia's seizure of independence in 1965.

A few minutes after Sir Alec's arrival he emerged again with the Rhodesian Prime Minister, Ian Smith, to pose for press photographers. No details of the progress of the negotiations have been released.
