  • Description

The whole of the Middle East is at a standstill celebrating the biggest Moslem Holiday of the calendar- the Courban Bairan. The holiday ends the month dedicated to pilgrimage to the Holy Mecca and it remembers the time when Abraham, ready to sacrifice his son to God, was sent a sheep to use instead.

Egypt has closed down all Government offices, stores for four days and President Abdul Nasser has sent congratulatory messages to other Moslem countries, including for the first time, Turkey, Pakistan and Iran but deliberately excluding Jordan's King Hussein and Iraqi's Kassim.

Cairo in a sweltering heat celebrates the holiday- thousand of people find refuge from the weather on the Nile banks in the gardens.
