  • Description

Soccer, and England had an easy 4-0 win over Northern Ireland in a European Championship match at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday (7 February). Their greatest asset was the European footballer of the year, Kevin Keegan, who plays for the German club, Hamburg. His dazzling display in the group one qualifying game boosted England's chances of reaching the final eight in Italy next year.

SYNOPSIS: Northern Ireland, in white shorts and playing from right to left, had been expected to play a tight, defensive game. In fact, their tactics were totally different, and they went straight into the attack at the start of the match.

Northern Ireland goalkeeper, Pat Jennings, came in for criticism after the match but this was one shot he did stop. But it was only a matter of time -- twenty five minutes to be exact -- before Keegan headed England into the lead. The Irishmen fought back, and before half-time they came close to narrowing the gap from a free kick which hit the post by Sammy McIlroy.

One minute after the interval Keegan again showed his expertise by setting up England's second goal for Bob Latchford.

Keegan never let the Irish defence rest.

Manchester City's Dave Watson got the third with a powerful header from a corner, and England had it all sewn up.

The Ulstermen did not lose heart completely and this move was finally blocked by England Captain Emlyn Hughes.

Ireland's misery was made complete when Keegan flicked this ball over to leave Bob Latchford the easiest of chances.
