  • Description

Conflicting reports are still coming in as to the size and scope of the recent incursion by South African troops into Angola. The Official Angolan News Agency (ANGOP) claims that South African troops killed 600 people, mainly refugees from South West Africa (Namibia) in an attack on a refugee camp. It also said that many women and children were killed in the combined air and ground operation. South African authorities have denied these claims. Their operational Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Jack Dutton, has said that the main reason for the attack was to destroy a base used by South West African People's Organisation (SWAPO) guerrillas for attacks inside South West Africa. He stressed that his troops only attacked a key military target.
