    President Anwar Sadat promised Egypt on Monday (14 April) that important and drastic changes would be made to improve the country's economic situation.

    Speaking on national radio and television, President Sadat said the cost of living in Egypt had risen to "an unacceptable level".

    He said he did not want changes in the faces in Government, but a change in attitude and policies.

    Soon after the speech, the Egyptian President asked his Interior Minister, Mamdouh Salem, 55, to become the country's new Prime Minister.

    Mr. Salem was Deputy Prime Minister under Doctor Abdol Aziz Hegazi who resigned with the entire Cabinet on Sunday.

    In his speech to the nation, President Sadat said the new Government would have a tough task to curb heavy price increases which had reached an unbearable level.

    He said there would be no change in Egypt's open-door economic policy.....but warned that individual profiteering and corruption would be stamped out.
