Background: The Amir of Kuwait presented degrees to the first batch of graduates of Kuwait University at a ceremony at the university on Saturday (5 December). The ceremony was part of a session of the Arab Universities Union.
The Amir expressed the hope that the council of the Arab Universities Union would accomplish its noble objective of strengthening the links among Arab universities and in raising the standard of university education to secure for young Arabs a measure of their capability. In presenting the degrees to 267 students he congratulated them on their success.
Others attending the ceremony included the Speaker of Kuwait's National Assembly, members of the ruling family, Cabinet Ministers, directors of universities in other Arab countries and senior officials of the Ministry of Education.
Jordan's Minister for Finance, Mr. Ahmed Al-Louzi, and an Iraqi Minister of State, Dr. Rasheed Rifaci, were among the foreign representatives.
Kuwait's Minister of Education, Mr. Saleh Abdul Malek As Saleh, said that the country expected its sons and daughters who had received the privilege of university education to mirror the culture of Kuwait.
