  • Description

Over 350 delegates and observers, from 57 different countries, assembled at the Sankei Kaikan Hall, Tokyo, October 26, for the opening of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade meeting. It is the 15th session of the G.A.T.T. contracting parties. The conference was addressed by Japan's Prime Minister, Nobusuko Kishi, and by Fernando Garcia Oldini, of Chile, chairman of the session.

Mr. Dillon, American Under Secretary of State, has pleaded to the delegates for the removal of discriminatory restrictions applied against imports from dollar areas. This would help America to rectify her current balance of payments deficit, and - said Mr. Dillon - avoid the alternative of balancing world trade at a lower and less prosperous level.

Japanese Foreign Minister, Mr. Fujiyama, asked that opportunity for fair trade competition in overseas markets should also be given to Japan's trade.

New regional economic groupings, such as the European Economic Community and the outer seven Free Trade Area, effects of the world recession on under developed countries, and Asian exports to industrialised countries are other matters being discussed at the G.A.T.T. meeting.
