    THE SOUTHERN FRENCH PORT OF MARSEILLES HIT BY A 24 HOUR STRIKE BY SEAMEN, DOCKERS AND CLERICAL WORKERS. THE STRIKE PARALYSED ALL ACTIVITY IN THE PORT YESTERDAY (MONDAY).

    UNION OFFICIALS SAID THE STRIKE, TO BACK DEMANDS FOR HIGHER WAGES AND BETTER WORKING CONDITIONS WAS MORE THAN 80 PERCENT EFFECTIVE.

    SEVERAL LINERS WERE HIT BY THE STRIKE BUT WERE ABLE TO SAIL TODAY.

    BUT OTHERS SAIL NO MORE ON THEIR TRADITIONAL ROUTES - WITH THE CUT IN TRAFFIC AFTER THE EXODUS OF FRENCH PEOPLE FROM ALGERIA - AND NORTH AFRICA IN RECENT YEARS - SEVERAL SHIPS HAVE BEEN SOLD. SECURITY OF EMPLOYMENT NOW AND IN THE FUTURE IS A MAJOR CONCERN OF THE PORT WORKERS.
