  • Description

Talks to patch up differences between Jordan and Palestine guerrillas failed on Tuesday (30 January) after a long meeting between Arab Defence and Foreign Ministers in Cairo.

When the four-day meeting broke up, the Chief of-Staff of Egypt's Armed Forces, General Saad Eddein El Shazly had little to say. But he did say that no decisions had been taken on a number of issues, and any decisions that had been taken were not to be disclosed.

What is known, however, is that Syria will get more financial aid after its recent wave of attacks from Israel.

After the meeting ended, all the delegates were met by President Sadat.

In the closing stages of the meeting, Palestinian commandos told the joint Arab Defence council that they wouldn't abide by its resolutions unless Jordan lifted its embargo on guerrilla operations from Jordanian territory against Israel.

Within a few days, a committee representing four Arab nations will fly to Jordan to try once more at doing what the Cairo meeting failed to do.

There's no date fixed yet for this meeting, but it's already known that King Hussein of Jordan is flying to Washington next week for talks with United States officials on the Middle East crisis.

SYNOPSIS: However, with the meeting over, all the delegates met President Sadat for informal talks. There was no official statement about the failure or success of plans to liberate arab territories at the meeting, but within a few days, a committee representing four Arab nations will fly to Jordan for another meeting to try to repair the differences between King Hussein and the Palestinian guerrillas. The talks will not be an open and shut case. The Palestinian commandos have already made it clear to the defence council that they won't lift a finger to abide by its resolutions unless Jordan lets the guerrillas operate against Israel from its own territory.
