Background: Representatives of the world's non-aligned countries have gathered in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo for the non-aligned summit conference taking place this week. Altogether an estimated 3,500 people from most of the 85 non-aligned countries will attend.

SYNOPSIS: The conference will be held in Bandaranaike Hall. Opposite the hall is a recently completed statue of Lord Buddha, where a big crowd gathered on Sunday for the official unveiling.

One of the official guests at the ceremony was the President of Sri Lanka, Mr. William Gopallawa. Musicians played traditional Ceylonese tunes as the President arrived. A large number of Buddhist monks also attended the ceremony.

The statue was officially unveiled by the Prime Minister, Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike. The unveiling was a prelude to the non-aligned summit, which began on Monday (9 August) when officials of the non-aligned movement's co-ordinating bureau met to put together a series of proposed amendments to draft political and economic resolutions which will go before the summit conference.

The major political work begins on Wednesday when the foreign ministers meet. The non-aligned movement has grown from 25 members at its first summit in Belgrade in 1961 to 85 now.
