Background: With the news of the military coup d'etat ringing in their minds, French political leaders met at the Hotel Matignon in Paris to consider the Algerian situation. There were representatives not only from Mon. Gaillards former Government but from all the National parties.

There were constant comings and goings between midnight and 1.30 a.m.

Among those present were M. Pflimlin, Frances new Premier, M. Lacoste, Minister for Algeria, M. Robert Schuman, M. Pineau, M. Chaban Delmas, and last, but not least, M. Gaillard himself.

At the Elysee Palace, after the vote of investiture, (274 for, 129 against, 137 abstantions, including the Communists) M. Pflimlin arrived with members of his new Government for a special Cabinet meeting with President Coty at 5.30 a.m.

During the next few days M. Pflimlin and his colleagues will be called upon to make stern decisions regarding the overall situation in Algeria.
