  • Description

The anniversary of the beginning of the 6-day war, June 5th, was expected to be a day of strikes and demos and during the last week extremist elements on the West Bank had called on the population to manifest its opposition to Israel in this manner. Yet boty in Jerusalem and Ramalla shops were open, business was as usual and only a few slogans smeared on walls were a last-minute effort by the extremists to show their flag. Only in the village of Beth Safafa on the outskirts of Jerusalem were its 4 shots closed and workers of the municipality under guard of the security forces overpainted the slogans on the shutters whilst young and old inhabitants looked on. In Ramallah the absence of security forces inside the town was remarkable and only on the highway to Nablus near the refugee camp did armoured cars patrol from time to time. In Jerusalem itself business was brisk and even though security forces were in evidence both inside and outside the Old City, no incidents were reported. (1800hrs)
