  • Description

LESOTHO'S PRIME MINISTER, CHIEF LEABUA JONATHAN, YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) TOLD A PRESS CONFERENCE IN MASERU THAT THE COUNTRY IS "STILL COMMITTED TO THE CONCEPT OF MONARCHY" IN SPITE OF KING MOSHOESHOE HAVING BEEN REMOVED FROM POWER AND HELD IN DETENTION. MEANWHILE, POLICE AND TROOPS KEEP AN UNEASY CONTROL OF THE SITUATION IN THE TINY AFRICAN COUNTRY.

CHIEF JONATHAN SEIZED COMPLETE POWER IN LESOTHO AFTER THE JANUARY 27TH ELECTIONS - THE FIRST TO BE HELD IN THE SMALL SOUTH AFRICAN MOUNTAIN STATE SINCE INDEPENDENCE FROM BRITAIN IN 1966. CLAIMING THAT HE WOULD HAVE BEEN HANGED BY THE OPPOSITION BASUTOLAND CONGRESS PARTY IF THEY HAD TAKEN POWER AFTER WINNING THE ELECTIONS BY THREATS OF VIOLENCE AND INTIMIDATION, CHIEF JONATHAN DECLARED A STATE OF EMERGENCY BEFORE THE FINAL RESULTS OF THE ELECTION WERE KNOWN, THREW HIS OPPOSITION RIVAL NTSU MEKHEHLE INTO JAIL, SUSPENDED THE CONSTITUTION AND HAD THE KING HELD IN VIRTUAL DETENTION IN HIS BUNGALOW PALACE.

THE PRIME MINISTER'S WHITE-LED POLICE FORCE IS STILL ENFORCING DUSK-TO-DAWN CURFEW THROUGHOUT THE ENCLAVE AND CHIEF JONATHAN HAS STATED THAT THE "SITUATION IS FIRMLY UNDER CONTROL WITH NO PROSPECTS OF TROUBLE AND NO SIGNS OF TENSION".

DURING THE PRESS CONFERENCE, CHIEF JONATHAN ALSO ANNOUNCED THAT HE HOPED AN INTERIM CONSTITUTION ALLOWING HIM TO CONTINUE IN POWER WOULD BE COMPLETED BEFORE THE END OF FEBRUARY - AND THAT A NEW CONSTITUTION WOULD THEN BE PLACED BEFORE THE PEOPLE AT A LATER STAGE BY A CONSTITUTIONAL COMMISSION WHICH WOULD TOUR THE COUNTRY SOUNDING OUT PUBLIC OPINION.

THEN THE PRIME MINISTER TURNED TO THE QUESTION OF THE MONARCHY.

EARLIER THE SAME DAY, KING MOSHOESHOE'S WIFE - QUEEN MAMOHATO - AND HIS ONE-MONTH-OLD BABY DAUGHTER PRINCESS MASSEEISO, HAD VISITED QUEEN ELIZABETH HOSPITAL IN MASERU FOR A MEDICAL CHECK-UP.
