Background: Security forces killed a woman and a man they claimed were guerrillas in a house situated in a quiet residential area of Guatemala City. The forces moved into the house after a 45 minute gun battle with a guerrilla group. Gun battles are becoming something of a regular occurrence in Guatemala City and the surrounding countryside. Ninety-two people have been killed and 286 wounded in the latest wave of political violence. The dead included 18 security officers killed in clashes with guerrillas. About 3,500 people were killed in Guatemala last year in violence involving left-wing guerrillas who are trying to overthrow the government and security forces who are backed by extreme right-wing groups.
