Background: JAPAN'S KAZUO TSUCHIYA, SILVER MEDALLIST IN THE 5,000 METRES ON THE OPENING DAY OF THE GAMES, ON TUESDAY STREAKED AWAY WITH THE 10,000 METRES GOLD MEDAL. HIS TIME: 30 MINS 36.8 SECS.

THE 24-YEAR-OLD UNIVERSITY STUDENT LED FOR NEARLY ALL THE RACE. BUT IT WAS ONLY IN THE LAST TWO LAPS THAT HE WAS ABLE TO BREAK AWAY FROM HIS TEAM MATE SUNAO SHIRAI, WHO COLLECTED THE SILVER MEDAL.

CEYLON'S BAREFOOTED SELLAPULIAGE LUCIAN ROSA, COMPETING IN HIS FIRST INTERNATIONAL GAMES, RAN ON WELL TO TAKE THE BRONZE MEDAL.

FROM THE START, TSUCHIYA AND SHIRAI RACED ALMOST SHOULDER TO SHOULDER AND SOON OPENED UP A CAP OF ABOUT 50 METRES OVER ROSA. THE OTHERS DROPPED WELL BACK AND WERE NEVER A POSSIBILITY.

THE RACE WAS RUN IN EXTREMELY HUMID CONDITIONS AND THE TWO JAPANESE REACHED THE HALF-WAY MARK IN 15 MINS 6.6 SECS.

IN THE MEN'S HIGH DIVING EVENT, TWO JAPANESE DIVERS HELD OFF A PERSISTENT CHALLENGE FROM SOUTH KOREA TO WIN THE GOLD AND SILVER MEDALS.

YOSUKE ARITMITSU CAPTURED THE TOP HONOUR WITH 159.78 POINTS AND YASOU YAMAWAKI WON THE SILVER AFTER A CLOSE CONTEST WITH SOUTH KOREA'S SON JAEUNG, IN THE VOLUNTARY DIVES IN THE AFTERNOON.
