    Background: Academy of Sciences, the oldest scientific institution in the Soviet Union celebrates it 250th anniversary.

    The Presidium, the Academy's executive body, has been stationed in this building from 1934.

    Its research institutions occupy modern buildings... At the moment of its inception the Academy consisted of a small group of researchers and their pupils. Among its members were the famous European scientists Eiler and Bernulli....
    Mikhail Lomonosov, the first Russian academician, made invaluable contribution in the development of many field of science and greatly influenced the entire work of the Academy that followed. It was on the initiative of Lomonosov that Moscow University was established as well as a number of laboratories, museums of natural history, libraries, publishing houses....
    The world science knows of many Russian names: father of the periodic chart Mendeleef, physicist Lebedev, botanist Timiryazev, physiologist Pavlov, chemist Butlerov....
    The were followed by Soviet times by academicians: Ioffe, Kurchatov, Korolyev, Landau, Vavilov....
    They were among the founders of the existing fields of scence.

    There are research institutions named after them.

    All institutes related to the Academy, more than 200, have been set up in after the revolution. Development of the remote areas in Siberia called in the recent years for founding the Siberian branch of the Academy, scientific centers of broad range of research in the Far Eastern Area and the Urals. Specialised science centers--for physics, biology and nuclear research-academy of sciences are active now in the European USSR.

    Today the Academy has 250 members, 450 corresponding members and 69 foreign members.

    The fundamental research of the Academy's scientists is the determining factor of the advances in technology and national economy. Science has become a productive force in the socialists society.
