She's hoping to make the 3,500-mile voyage to Rhode Island, New York, in 40 days. Miss Milnes-Walker's parents and friends gathered on the foreshore at Dale to wish her good luck. A small armada of vessels accompanied her yacht a short distance out to sea.

    SYNOPSIS: 28-year-old Nicolette Milnes-Walker says goodbye to her parents and friends at Dale, on the Welsh coast, on Saturday. She was about to set sail in her yacht, single-handed, for Rhode Island.....New York.

    After farewells, Miss Milnes-Walker rowed out to her yacht to begin the voyage.

    She hopes to cover the 3,500 miles across the Atlantic Ocean in 40 days, and is taking the precaution of strapping herself in a safety harness as she is not a good swimmer.

    Miss Milnes-Walker is a research psychologist and hopes to study her reactions to loneliness at sea. She has admitted to being scared of falling overboard, but is anxious to become the first woman to cross the Atlantic non-stop and single-handed.

    An armada of small craft followed her a short distance out to sea but returned when rough weather developed.
