  • Description

UNITED NATIONS AND TURKISH AUTHORITIES IN CYPRUS TODAY (WEDNESDAY) DISCUSSED THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE CEASEFIRE LINE SEPARATING THE GREEK AND TURKISH COMMUNITIES IN NICOSIA. THE TALKS FOLLOW TURKISH-CYPRIOT OBJECTIONS TO GREEK-CYPRIOT DEMANDS FOR THE U.N. TO TAKE OVER GREEK-OWNED SHOPS ON THE TURKISH SIDE OF THE CEASEFIRE LINE.

MEN OF THE U.N. FORCE KEEP UP A CONSTANT PATROL OUTSIDE THE GREEK SHOPS. HOWEVER, THE GREEK-CYPRIOTS CLAIM THAT TURKISH-CYPRIOTS HAVE MOVED INTO THE SHOPS, AND WANT THE U.N. TO FORCE THE TURKS TO GO. IT'S BELIEVED THE U.N. HAS HESITATED TO DO THIS FOR FEAR OF A VIOLENT CLASH WITH THE TURKISH-CYPRIOTS.

MEANWHILE, THE CYPRUS GOVERNMENT HAS MAINTAINED A BLOCKADE SINCE LAST THURSDAY ON TURKISH-CYPRIOTS ENTERING OR LEAVING THE TURKISH QUARTER OF NICOSIA. HOWEVER, THE WEEKLY SUPPLY OF 120 TONS OF BREAD GRAIN FROM GOVERNMENT STORES IS CONTINUING TO BE SUPPLIED TO THE TURKISH SECTOR.
