  • Description

The Viking spirit of legend is still alive in Norway today. Some months ago Kirk Douglas, the well-known film star, said that the spirit was dead, but two young men Rolf Schonhoyder and Larsen, set out to prove otherwise. They sent a telegram to Kirk Douglas in Hollywood asking him if he would take a bet on them being able to sail a Viking ship over the Atlantic to America.

Mr Douglas replied with a "go-ahead". He went further and said he would pay them 5,000 dollars if they could sail a Viking ship from Bergen to New York, with the stipulation they should arrive not later than 12 o'clock noon June 25th. The ship must check past the Ambrose Light, New York at that time.

If the Norwegian won the gamble, the 5,000 dollars would be paid to be used in memory of Norwegian soldiers killed during the last war. Kirk Douglas will also pay the cost of the whole expedition.

The Norwegians are now busily preparing an old Viking ship that Mr Douglas used in a film Norway last year. No date of departure has yet been arranged, but it will be soon.
