  • Description

TRAINS OLD AND NEW WERE ON DISPLAY AT THE FIRST RAILWAY FAIR IN TOKYO, JUNE 26, AS JAPAN NATIONAL RAILWAYS UNVEILED THE FIRST WIDE-GAUGE "STREAMLINER" ON A TEST OUTSIDE THE CAPITAL. AT THE FAIR, A REPLICA OF JAPAN'S FIRST RIAL STATION, PLUS SEVERAL STEAM ENGINES AND COACHES, ATTRACTED CROWDS OF SIGHTSEERS.

AT OISO, OUTSIDE TOKYO, SPECTATORS SAW THE NEWEST SUPER-EXPRESS GIVEN ITS FIRST TEST RUN OVER A 10-KILOMETRE TRACK. A SPECIAL, WIDE-GAUGE TRACK IS BEING LAID BETWEEN TOKYO. AND OSAKA FOR THE BIG, FOUR-COUCH "STREAMLINER," WHICH IS SCHEDULED TO GO INTO SERVICE IN 1964.

THE BIG TRAIN WILL COVER THE 500-KILOMETRE DISTANCE IN SLIGHTLY LESS THAN THREE HOURS, TRAVELLING AT SPEEDS OF UP TO 250 KPH., TO MAKE IT THE WORLD'S FASTEST PASSENGER TRAIN. THE TRIP BETWEEN THE TWO CITIES NOW TAKES SIX-AND-A-HALF HOURS BY FAST EXPRESS.

IN ITS FIRST TEST RUN, HOWEVER, THE NEW TRAIN IS RESTRICTED BY ITS SHORT TRACK TO SPEEDS OF NOT MORE THAN 50 KPH. THE TRAIN WILL BE TESTED AT HIGH SPEEDS OVER LONGER DISTANCES NEXT YEAR, WHEN MORE TRACK IS COMPLETED.
