    SOUTH VIETNAM'S PRESIDENT, GENERAL NGUYEN VAN THIEU, MET CABINET MINISTERS IN SAIGON THIS WEEK (THURSDAY) FOR A ROUND OF TALKS ON THE PROGRESS OF THE VIETNAM WAR. VICE-PRESIDENT NGUYEN CAO KY ACCOMPANIED THE PRESIDENT AT THE TALKS.

    THE CABINET MINISTERS WERE LED BY THE COUNTRY'S PRIME MINISTER, NGUYEN VAN LOC, A SAIGON LAWYER.

    THE TALKS DEALT MAINLY WITH SOUTH VIETNAM'S CURRENT MILITARY STRATEGY. THE UNITED STATES PLANS TO EQUIP SOUTH VIETNAMESE TROOPS WITH FURTHER ARMED POWER, AND THIS ALSO CAME UNDER DISCUSSION. WITH NEW SUPPLIES OF ARMS THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE TROOPS ARE EXPECTED TO BE ABLE TO TAKE A LARGER ROLE IN THE WAR.

    THE MEETING OCCURRED THE SAME DAY AS A U.S. MILITARY SPOKESMAN ANNOUNCED THAT AMERICAN CASUALTIES IN VIETNAM SINCE 1961 HAD TOTALLED MORE THAN 109,000. OF THESE, MORE THAN 15,000 WERE KILLED.
