  • Description

Traces of London's morning fog were still in the air, Oct 17, when King Mahendra and Queen Ratna of Nepal arrived from Gatwick Airport at Victoria Station to be welcomed by Queen Elizabeth, the Duke of Edinburgh and other members of the Royal Family.

Crowds including Nepalese students watched outside the station as King Mahendra, in ornate uniform, saluted while his country's national anthem was played. After the inspection of a guard of honour, guests and hosts left for the State drive to Buckingham Palace, with the Nepalese King and Queen Elizabeth riding in the first carriage and Queen Ratna, the Duke and Nepal's Crown Prince Birendra - who is at Eton - sharing the second, followed by two other carriages.

People lining the processional route had been waiting patiently for several hours. Headscarves, mufflers and turned-up collars were the order of the day. Waves of cheers rose as the crowd saw the Sovereign's Escort of Household Cavalry in full glittering pomp ride beside the carriages. Scarlet outriders preceded the procession. At several points, the Union Jack was flying side by side with the Nepalese double pennant showing a stylised sun and moon.

The Nepalese Royal couple's three-day State visit will be followed by a fortnight's official visit, including an extensive tour of England and Scotland.
