  • Description

Pope Paul left by air from Rome today (Thursday) at the start of a tour of the Far East and Australia.

The pontiff's 10-day journey is the longest, most varied and most colourful of his eight-year reign. He will visit nine territories -- Iran, East Pakistan, the Philippines, American Samoa, Western Samoa, Australia, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Ceylon.

He was due to arrive at Dacca in flood-devasted East Pakistan later today after stopping over briefly in Teheran. In a statement issued by the Vatican Press Office Pope Paul appealed to the people of the devasted area not to despair.

The 73-year-old Pope has made eight previous overseas tours and the Pontiff has called himself "an apostle on the move."
