  • Description

The United Nation's 34th session is due to begin on Tuesday (18 September), and Zaire's President Mobutu Sese Seko has met in New York with Secretary General Dr. Kurt Waldheim. The new 13-week session of the world body will be presided over by an unrelenting critic of colonialism and arch foe of white minority rule in Southern Africa, Salim Ahmed Salim of Tanzania. Among the speakers at the U.N's new session will be Pope John Paul II, who has also accepted an invitation to visit Zain later this year to celebrate the centenary of Zaire's conversion to Catholicism.

SYNOPSIS: Dr Kurt Waldheim met with President Mobutu on Friday (14 September). The Zaire President is known to have a pro-western outlook, and his meeting with Waldheim come at a time of increased African pressure on Western nations over their policies toward the continent. Zaire's bankrupt economy heavily depends on Western aid. Mobutu's government expects final approval by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) of 150 million dollars in loans spread out over 18 months. In addition Zaire owes about 400 million dollars more to private American banks and government agencies. The West believes Mobutu once again to be safe in Zaire, and that was shown last month, when American planes ferried home some eleven-hundred inter-African security troops, stationed in Zaire since Angola's invasion of Kolwezi last year. But it's not just the West Mobutu depends on. As a landlocked country, Zaire needs good neighbourly relations to sell its exports.
