Background: The Soviet Red Cross recently sent an aircraft load of relief supplies to Chilean refugee children in Peru. The flight left Moscow on Sunday (1 September) for Lima, the capital of Peru, from where it was distributed to the Chilean children.
The flight was one of several over the last weeks. A few days earlier the Soviet Red Cross had sent relief supplies to Cyprus through the International Red Cross in Geneva, and shipments to flood victims in Bangladesh are planned.
Many thousands of Chileans fled the country following he coup in their country last September. Large numbers have resettled in other countries, including many in both eastern and western Europe. But there are still thousands more refugees in South and Latin America......mainly in Peru and Argentine.
Among many other countries, the United States earlier this year pledged nearly 1.5 million dollars (about GBP 650,000) in aid to help resettle the refugees - mainly those in Peru and Argentina.
