Pattaya was once a sleepy fishing village overlooking the Gulf of Thailand. Now it's rapidly becoming one of the world's leading holiday resorts. Already, more foreign tourists go to Pattaya than to the more famous Asian resorts of Bali and Penang. One reason for the growth is the recent worldwide boom in package holidays. Another is that Pattaya was originally developed to meet the holiday needs of United States soldiers serving in Vietnam. Gary Neat of the Australian Broadcasting Commission reports:
