  • Description

The first group of thirty diplomats ordered out of Bolivia by the government of Colonel Hugo Bander left La Paz by air for Moscow, Monday (10th April).

They were among 119 Soviet diplomats and their families listed for expulsion after allegations by the Bolivian government that they were involved in a Cuban-inspired plot against the country. The order was given on March 30th. The Bolivian government refused to extend the seven-day deadline despite the admission of Foreign Minister Mario Gutierrez on March 31st that the list might contain some errors. He made the admission after the Soviet Ambassador Alexai Sherbacevich had declared that there were no more than ninety-two Soviet citizens in La Paz.

Two more groups are expected to leave later - "until the names on the list are exhausted", Soviet Embassy sources said.

Bolivia has not broken off diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union.
