  • Description

KATANGESE TROOPS SHOT DOWN A UNITED NATIONS HELICOPTER FLYING OVER THEIR LINES IN ELISABETHVILLE LAST MONDAY, NOT MORE THAN 300 YARDS FROM THE UN INDIAN POSITIONS. HIT BY A RIFLE BULLET, THE HELICOPTER LANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF A KATANGESE GENDARMERIE PLATOON. AN INDIAN UN OFFICER, WOUNDED ON BOARD THE HELICOPTER, LATER DIED IN HOSPITAL.

EARLIER THAT DAY, HEAVY FIGHTING FLARED UP BETWEEN KATANGESE AND UN ETHIOPIAN FORCES NEAR THE GIANT UNION MINIERE PLANT ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF ELISABETHVILLE. FIRST REPORTS SAID THERE WERE "MANY DEAD", BUT PRESIDENT TSHOMBE TOLD A PRESS CONFERENCE LATER THERE WERE NO CASUALTIES.

TENSION AGAIN MOUNTED WHEN BRIGADIER NARONHA, INDIAN UN COMMANDER IN ELISABETHVILLE, APPROACHED THE KATANGESE LINES TO DEMAND THE RELEASE OF THE HELICOPTER. HE WAS BACKED UP BY OVER 1,000 HEAVILY ARMED TROOPS AND A DOZEN ARMOURED CARS.

THE KATANGESE, REPORTED TO BE IN A BELLIGERENT MOOD, SHOUTED"WE ARE READY TO DIE. WE ARE NOT INTERESTED IN TALKING." BRIGADIER NARONHA REPLIED: "WELL, THEN CHOOSE SOME OTHER DAY THAN CHRISTMAS." THE KATANGESE FINALLY ALLOWED SWEDISH MECHANICS TO REPAIR THE HELICOPTER, GROUNDED BY SHOTS WHICH DAMAGED A PUMP. THEN IT TOOK OFF AND SPLUTTERED ITS WAY TO BEHIND THE UN LINES.
