Background: The National Cardiological Institute at the Treichville University Centre in Abidjan was opened on wednesday (24 November). The opening ceremony coincided with the fourth Abidjan Medical Conference which convened in the Ivory Coast on Monday (22 November).
SYNOPSIS: The Cardiological Institute is housed in three modern buildings especially adapted to the country's needs. The construction and equipment cost has been assessed at approximately 1.5 billion CFA francs.
The President of the Ivory Coast, Mr. Felix Houphouet-Boigny took part in the opening ceremony as did Madame Simone Veil, French Minister for Health. A plaque was unveiled in the Institute's foyer to commemorate the occasion.
The personnel have been recruited from the Ivory Coast as well as from France and Canada. It is the first medica centre of this kind in the area. For its activities in both the therapeutic and the pedagogical domains, the cardiological Institute will have a regional character, serving not only the Ivory Coast, but also other West African Countries. It will treat patients with heart diseases, give specialised courses for students of medicine and carry out research projects.
