  • Description

Jumbo and the British Alpine Hannibal Expedition left the mountain hamlet of Le Planey, July 26, on the last stage of their 12-day, 84-mile journey through the Alps from Montmelian, France, to Turir, Italy.

Le Planey lies close to the Col du Clapier pass, leading into Italy, which John Hoyte, the expedition's young leader and others believed to be he pass used by Hannibal on his historic march with elephants over the Alps into Italy more than 2000 years ago. By 2.30 p.m., July 28, however, Jumbo had lumbered over the 6,400 ft. high Mont Cenis Pass after an 8-day march from Rhone Valley, thus becoming by this route since Hannibal's famous invasion in 218 B.C. It had been found impossible to surmount the Col du Clapier pass with Jumbo in tow, but Hoyte was reported still unshaken in his belief that it was through this pass that Hannibal travelled. Various other authorities believe Hannibal may have used any one of three other passes.

Seeking to prove his case in favour of the Col du Clapier pass, Hoyte has been checking to see if his route agrees with the description of Hannibal's route given by the ancient Greek historian Polybius, and hoped later also to find archaeological trances of Hannibal's two-day rest with his army on his pass.

Before leaving Le Planey, which lies more than 5,000 ft. above sea level, eleven-year-old Jumbo tried on the boots and coat specially made for her. She weights about these tons and is now much fitter after losing 300 15. on the journey into the mountains.
