Background: SIR CHRISTOPHER COCKERELL, INVENTOR OF THE HOVERCRAFT. TODAY (FRIDAY) RODE ACROSS THE ENGLISH CHANNEL ON THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST HOVERCRAFT CHANNEL CROSSING. DURING THE ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS, A MEDAL HONOURING THE EVENT WAS PRESENTED AND A PLAQUE WAS UNVEILED.

SIR CHRISTOPHER, ACCOMPANIED BY A NUMBER OF INVITED GUESTS AND JOURNALISTS RODE IN THE LARGE SR N4 MOUNBATTEN-CLASS HOVERCRAFT FROM RAMSGATE HARBOUR ACROSS THE ENGLISH CHANNEL TO CALAIS. THE HOVERCRAFT THEN WENT ALONG THE FRENCH COAST TO BOULOGNE AND THEN BACK ACROSS THE CHANNEL TO DOVER.

DURING THE CELEBRATIONS, SIR CHRISTOPHER SAID THAT HE FAVOURED A CHANNEL BRIDE, AND NOT A TUNNEL, LINKING BRITAIN WITH THE CONTINENT.

"IT COULD BE ARRANGED FOR A HOVERTRAIN CUTTING THE JOURNEY TIME BETWEEN THE CENTRES OF LONDON AND PARIS TO AN HOUR," HE SAID.

THE SR. N4 WHICH MADE THE TRIP HAS AN OVERALL LENGTH OF 130 FEET 2 INCHES (39.7 M.) AND CAN ATTAIN A SPEED OF 55 TO 65 KNOTS (102-120 KMS. PER HOUR) IN FAIRLY CALM WATER.
