  • Description

THE INTENSE CLASH OF ATHLETES AT MEXICO CITY MAY REIGN SUPREMELY DURING THE OLYMPIC GAMES THEMSELVES, BUT AT THE OLYMPIC VILLAGE THE ATHLETES LIVE TOGETHER IN AN ATMOSPHERE OF INTERNATIONAL AND INTER-RACIAL HARMONY AND COMRADESHIP THAT EXISTS SCARCELY ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD. THE ATHLETES, MALE AND FEMALE, TAKE THEIR MEALS TOGETHER, SWOP BADGES, ENJOY MOMENTS OF RELAXATION TOGETHER AND MAKE INTERNATIONAL FRIENDSHIPS THAT WILL IN MANY INSTANCES LAST LONG AFTER THE MEXICAN OLYMPICS HAVE BECOME PART OF WORLD HISTORY.

THE CALM OF THE OLYMPIC VILLAGE IS BROKEN ONLY BY THE ARRIVAL OF MEXICAN AUTOGRAPH HUNTERS WHO CLUSTER OUTSIDE THE MAIN GATES BY THE SCORE. SOLDIERS GUARDING THE VILLAGE "AROUND THE CLOCK" KEEP THE PUBLIC, AND ESPECIALLY THE AUTOGRAPH HUNTERS, OUT OF THE VILLAGE IN A FRIENDLY BUT FIRM MANNER. BUT THE ARRIVAL OF AN ATHLETE IS ALWAYS THE SIGNAL FOR THE HUNTERS TO DESCEND. THE MORE INTERNATIONAL NAMES THE HUNTERS CAN GET THE BETTER IT IS AS FAR AS THEY ARE CONCERNED, AND OFTEN TOURISTS, NEWSMEN AND OTHER VISITORS ARE STOPPED AND ASKED FOR THEIR AUTOGRAPHS AS WELL.

THE CHALLENGE OF PROVIDING 30,000 MEALS A DAY FOR THE 10,000 ATHLETES FROM III COUNTRIES AT THE OLYMPIC VILLAGE IS HANDLED BY A CATERING TEAM HEADED BY MEXICO'S LEADING RESTAURANTEUR, CESAR BALSA. ABOUT 1,250,000 MEALS WILL BE SERVED TO THE ATHLETES, THEIR COACHES AND TRAINERS BETWEEN 12 SEPTEMBER AND 7 NOVEMBER. THE TOTAL WEIGHT OF MEAT, FISH AND POULTRY IS 788 TONS. ALL FOOD SERVICE EMPLOYEES HAVE COMPLETED INTENSIVE TRAINING COURSES INCLUDING SANITATION. THE ATHLETES DINE IN SIX IDENTICAL HALLS, EACH SEATING 600 PEOPLE.

SUNDAY WAS FOR THE ATHLETES, AS FOR EVERYONE ELSE, A DAY OF REST. MANY OF THEM SOUGHT OUT MEXICO CITY'S BEAUTIFUL FLOATING GARDENS, A SERIES OF LAKES AND STREAMS THAT IS ONE OF THE CITY'S MOST POPULAR ATTRACTIONS. HERE, BARGES, SKIFFS AND GONDOLA-STYLE BOATS PLY THE QUIETER BACKWATERS. SEVERAL ATHLETES MAINTAINED A FORM OF KEEP-FIT EXERCISE BY DANCING TO SERENADED MUSIC. THE GARDENS ARE ALSO THE SITE OF THE ROWING AND CANOEING COMPETITIONS.
