  • Description

BY AN OVERWHELMING MAJORITY, INDIA'S PARLIAMENTARY CONGRESS PARTY YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) GAVE PRIME MINISTER INDIANA GANDHI A VOTE OF CONFIDENCE - AND SO REVERSED THE DECISION MADE THE DAY BEFORE BY AN II-MAN WORKING COMMITTEE TO EXPEL MRS. GANDHI FROM THE RULING CONGRESS PARTY FOR "GAVE INDISCIPLINE". AS THE MEMBERS MET IN THE NEW DELHI PARLIAMENT, THOUSANDS OF INDIANS GATHERED IN THE STREETS TO OFFER THEIR POPULAR SUPPORT TO MRS. GANDHI.

THE WORKING PARTY'S MOVE TO EXPEL MRS. GANDHI, WAS LED BY PARTY PRESIDENT SIDDAVAHALLI NIJALINGAPPA AND WAS THE CULMINATION OF A LONG DRAWN-OUT SPLIT BETWEEN TWO FACTIONS WITHIN THE RULLING PARTY. WHICH ERUPTED INTO THE OPEN WHEN MRS. GANDHI SUPPORTED THE SUCCESSFUL PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE (MR. V.V. GIRI) AGAINST THE PARTY'S OFFICIAL CANDIDATE IN LAST AUGUST'S NATIONAL ELECTIONS.

IN A SPEECH TO PARLIAMENT, MRS. GANDHI REMINDED THEM THAT 44 MEMBERS OF HER FAMILY HAD SERVED THE CONGRESS PARTY - INCLUDING HER FATHER, THE LATE PANDIT JAWAHARLAL NEHRU, INDEPENDENT INDIA'S FIRST PRIME MINISTER.

THE RESOLUTION SUPPORTING MRS. GANDHI, WAS MOVED BY HOME MINISTER YESHWANTRAO CHAVAN. THE ANNOUNCED FINAL VOTE WAS 330 TO 102 - BUT THE OPPONENTS IMMEDIATELY CHALLENGED THOSE FIGURES. HOWEVER, THERE WAS NO DOUBT THAT THE MAJORITY WAS IN HER FAVOUR - EVEN IF A RECOUNT WERE TO BE DEMANDED BY THE OPPOSITION.

TWO MORE TESTS FACE MRS. GANDHI SOON - THE FIRST IS NEXT WEEK, WHEN HER OPPONENTS IN PARLIAMENT MAY SUPPORT A MOTION OF N CONFIDENCE BASED ON INDIA'S "HUMILIATION" THE ISLAMIC SUMMIT CONFERENCE IN RABAT; THE SECOND, ON NOVEMBER 22ND AT A MEETING OF THE ALL-INDIA CONGRESS COMMITTEE WHICH SHE HAS CALLED TO ELECT A NEW PARTY PRESIDENT TO REPLACE MR. NIJALINGAPPA. IF SHE EMERGES VICTORIOUS FROM THESE TWO SESSIONS, SHE WILL HAVE GAINED COMPLETE CONTROL OVER THE CONGRESS PARTY MACHINE - LEAVING HER OPPONENTS ONLY THE OPTION OF FALLING INTO LINE FOR RESIGNING.
