  • Description

SIR HUMPHREY AND LADY GIBBS HAVE MOVED BACK INTO THE FARM AT NYAMANDHLOVU, NEAR BULAWAYO, TO WHICH SIR HUMPHREY MIGRATED IN 1928. RHODESIA'S LONELIEST MAN LEFT GOVERNMENT HOUSE IN SALISBURY FOR THE LAST TIME ON JULY 6 AFTER 10 YEARS OF OFFICE -- AND AFTER BEING IGNORED SINCE 1965 BY THE ILLEGAL REGIME WHICH HE REFUSED TO RECOGNISE.

SINCE THE UNILATERAL DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE IN RHODESIA, SIR HUMPHREY HAD CONTINUED TO FUNCTION AS QUEEN ELIZABETH'S REPRESENTATIVE WHILE THE SMITH REGIME CUT OFF TELEPHONE LINKS TO GOVERNMENT HOUSE, REMOVED THE CEREMONIAL GUARD AND TOOK AWAY OFFICIAL CARS AND EQUIPMENT.

ALTHOUGH HE WAS BORN IN ENGLAND, 66-YEAR-OLD SIR HUMPHREY HAS A PASSIONATE LOVE OF RHODESIA AND REGARDS HIMSELF AS A RHODESIAN. IN 1934 HE MARRIED THE DAUGHTER OF A BULAWAYO FAMILY.
