  • Description

The Ivory Coast Government has recently launched a campaign to vaccinate 90 per cent of the country's population against measles, small pox and yellow fever.

In Abijdan the Institute of Hygiene---a department of the Ministry of Public Health and Population, has formed 50 teams of five medical assistants who have set up medical posts at strategic street corners.

Passers-by are attracted by a man using a loud hailer and the vaccinations themselves only take a few second to complete. The present campaign is due to end in Abidjan on August the fourth and the medical teams will then move to smaller towns and the countryside. At present about 30,000 people are being vaccinated in Abidjan every day. The vaccine itself comes from United States Aid Organisations. With the medical programme the Ivory Coast Government hopes to dramatically reduce the incidence of yellow fever, small pox and measles in the country.
