  • Description

THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF D-DAY -- THE DAY ALLIED FORCES INVADED NAZI EUROPE -- WAS CELEBRATED ALONG THE NORMANDY COAST YESTERDAY (SATURDAY). SCORES OF REMEMBRANCE CEREMONIES PAID HOMAGE TO THE THOUSANDS FROM THE BRITISH, AMERICAN, CANADIAN AND FREE FRENCH FORCES WHO DIED IN THE D-DAY ASSAULT 20 YEARS AGO.

OMAHA BEACH WAS THE SCENE OF ONE OF THE CEREMONIES. IT WAS HERE ON THE MORNING OF JUNE 6, 1944, THAT AMERICAN TROOPS POURED ASHORE ON TO FRENCH SOIL TO LINK UP WITH OTHER ALLIED FORCES IN THE MASSIVE DRIVE NORTH TO CHERBOURG.

YESTERDAY, UNDER AN OVERCAST SKY, THE BRITISH AND AMERICAN AMBASSADORS TO FRANCE AND OTHER DIGNITARIES REVIEWED A DETACHMENT OF U.S. TROOPS AND THEN ATTENDED A SHORT MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR THE FALLEN. DOZENS OF U.S. VETERANS WERE PRESENT.

WAR CEMETERIES HAD BEEN SPECIALLY SPRUCED UP FOR THE OCCASION. HIGH ABOVE, JET FIGHTERS STREAKED ACROSS THE SKY, DIPPING THEIR WINGS IN SALUTE.

THE TOWN OF SAINTE MERE EGLISE ATTRACTED HUNDREDS OF AMERICANS. IT WAS HERE, JUST AS THE MASSIVE INVASION WAS GETTING UNDER WAY 20 YEARS AGO, THAT AMERICAN PARATROOPS DROPPED OUT OF THE DAWN SKIES TO MAKE THE FIRST FOOTHOLD ON THE CHERBOURG PENINSULA.

ONE PARATROOPS WHO'LL NEVER FORGET THAT DAY IS EX-PRIVATE JOHN STEELE, WHOSE PARACHUTE GOT CAUGHT IN THE CHURCH TOWER. FOR TWO HOURS HE DANGLED THERE AS A GERMAN MACHINE-GUN FIRED FROM ABOVE. YESTERDAY, MR STEELE CAME BACK TO SAINTE MERE EGLISE.

ALSO THERE WAS GENERAL MATHEW RIDGWAY, WHO COMMANDED ONE OF THE TWO PARATROOP DIVISIONS. HE OPENED AN INVASION MUSEUM, WHICH IS TOPPED WITH A PLASTIC ROOF SHAPED LIKE A HUGE OPEN PARACHUTE.

BACK AT UTAH BEACH -- THE SCENE OF THE OTHER AMERICAN LANDING -- THE REMEMBRANCE CEREMONIES WENT ON, WITH VETERANS LAYING WREATHS AT THE MEMORIAL BUILT BY LOCAL FRENCHMEN. ABOVE A FAITHFUL OLD DAKOTA MILITARY TRANSPORT DRONED OVER THE NOW PEACEFUL BEACH AND DROPPED A WREATH.
